About Us

Plan, travel, celebrate with respect.

Día de Muertos (diademuertos.net) is a travel guide to the best places to celebrate Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, in Mexico and the United States. We help travelers and families plan a trip, understand the traditions and take part in a way that honours the people who keep them alive.

What you will find here

  • Mexico: where to go and when, from Oaxaca and Mexico City to Pátzcuaro, Janitzio, Mixquic, San Miguel de Allende, Aguascalientes and Mérida's Hanal Pixán.
  • United States: celebrations in cities such as San Antonio, Los Angeles, Tucson and San Diego.
  • Traditions: what the ofrenda, cempasúchil marigolds, papel picado, pan de muerto and calaveras mean, and how to be a good guest.
  • Plan Your Trip: when to book, where to stay, getting around and what to pack.
  • Events Calendar: parades, vigils, markets and festivals, with dates checked against official sources.

Día de los Muertos is a family celebration of memory. It is not Halloween and not a costume party, and our guides are written in that spirit. Read How We Research to see how we choose places and check dates.
